The M Segment: Whole Step Then Half Step
The M segment consists of a whole step followed by a half step, spanning 3 semitones (fret pattern: 0-2-3). It appears in the D major scale at degrees 2-3-4 (E-F#-G) and degrees 6-7-1 (B-C#-D). The M segment has a more compressed, leading sound compared to L — the half step at the end creates a sense of arrival, like a footstep landing. In tonal music, half steps that resolve by step are called leading tones, and M contains exactly that mechanism at its tail.

Warmup
5 min- 1.Tune to DADGAD. Play the D major scale on string 4, naming notes. When you reach E-F#-G (frets 2-4-5), pause and say 'that is where M will live today.'
- 2.Review: play an L segment on string 4 (frets 0-2-4). Say 'L — whole plus whole.' Then do it on string 6.
- 3.Light stretching — the M segment uses frets that are one fret closer together than L, so fretting-hand accuracy matters.
- 4.Set metronome to 55bpm.
Isolating and Drilling the M Segment
Main Practice
- 1.
Define M on string 4: play frets 2-4-5 (E-F#-G). Say 'M' after all three. Hold the last note 2 beats. This is M starting on E (degree 2). The half step is between F# (fret 4) and G (fret 5) — one fret. 8 reps.
- 2.
Find the second M on string 4: degrees 6-7-1 = B-C#-D = frets 9-11-12. Play frets 9-11-12. Say 'M'. The half step is between C# (fret 11) and D (fret 12). 8 reps.
- 3.
String 3 — M segments: on string 3 (open G), the M pattern 0-2-3 gives G-A-A# (not in D major). Find where M occurs in D major on string 3: frets 2-4-5 (A-B-C — wait, G+2=A, G+4=B, G+5=C; but C is not in D major). Find M segments that start on scale tones: degrees 2-3-4 start on E. Find E on string 3: fret 9 (G+9=D... recount: G(0) A(2) B(4) C(5) D(7) E(9)). So frets 9-11-12 on string 3 = E-F#-G. Say 'M'. 8 reps.

L vs M comparison on string 4: play L (frets 0-2-4, D-E-F#), then M (frets 2-4-5, E-F#-G). Notice the shared middle note (F#) and the different endpoints. Say 'L — wider, W+W' and 'M — narrower, W+H'. 5 comparison pairs.

Full scale with segment labels: play the D major scale on string 4 ascending. As you pass through each 3-note group, say the segment type: frets 0-2-4 = L, frets 2-4-5 = M, frets 4-5-7 = ... identify this (F#-G-A = H+W = not L or M, this is a P segment — preview). Skip labeling P for now. Frets 5-7-9 = G-A-B = L. Frets 7-9-11 = A-B-C# = L. Frets 9-11-12 = B-C#-D = M. So the scale ascending contains: L, M, [P], L, L, M. Say this aloud.

Sing M: play frets 2-4-5 on string 4 (E-F#-G) and sing along. Focus on feeling the half step land — it should sound like a footstep arriving home.
- 7.
At 60bpm: alternate L (frets 0-2-4) and M (frets 2-4-5) on string 4, ascending both, as quarter notes. 4 cycles. The shared F# at fret 4 means your finger stays and you just shift the endpoint.
Integration
7 min- 1.Freely play on strings 3 and 4. Whenever you play a 3-note group that is two whole steps, say 'L.' Whenever it is a whole then a half, say 'M.' Play for 4 minutes.
- 2.In your practice log, write: 'L = W+W = 0-2-4. M = W+H = 0-2-3.' Draw the fret dot pattern for each.
